on Fishery and Conservation Status of Sharks of Tamil Nadu held at Tuticorin
Regional Station of ICAR- CMFRI
Tuticorin Regional Station (TRS) of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) organised one-day awareness-cum-interactive workshop on ‘Fishery and Conservation Status of Sharks of Tamil Nadu’ at Tharuvaikulam Fishing village on 21st July 2023 to the mechanized gillnetters of Tharuvaikulam fishing village of Thoothukudi District incidentally catching the elasmobranch species as bycatch. The awareness programme was conducted by the scientific experts of ICAR-CMFRI, in the presence of officials from Tamil Nadu State Fisheries & Forest Department, NETFISH-MPEDA, Fishermen’s association leaders and representative fishermen.The main objective of the programme was to make aware the fishermen of currently listed shark species. Smt. N. Bala Saraswathi, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu Fisheries and Farmers Welfare Department, Tuticorin inaugurated the function and appreciated the various efforts taken by the ICAR-CMFRI. Further, she stressed the importance of the program for the welfare of mechanized gillnetters of Tharuvaikulam particularly in the identification of scheduled sharks under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the recently listed species in the appendix under CITES. Shri. Jhino Blessil, Forest Range Officer Tamil Nadu State Forest Department, Thoothukudi, Shri. Diwakar, Forest Range Officer and Dr. Vinoth S Ravindran, Station coordinator, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA)-NETFISH (Network for Fish Quality Management & Sustainable Fishing), Thoothukudi delivered felicitation address.The Scientist-in charge, ICAR-Tuticorin Regional Station of CMFRI, Tuticorin, welcomed the chief guests. Dr. C. Kalidas, Senior Scientist briefed about the importance of Shark Day celebration. Dr. D. Linga Prabu Senior Scientist, ICAR-TRS of CMFRI, Tuticorin outlined the programme. Dr. Vinoth Kumar, R., Scientist, ICAR-TRS of CMFRI, Tuticorin presented the details on Biology of Shark and its Fishery of Tamil Nadu. Dr. L. Ranjith, Senior Scientist, ICAR-TRS of CMFRI, Tuticorin, gave an elaborated presentation on the conservation status of shark resources and also briefed about the recently listed species in the schedule under the Wild life protection Act, 1972 and Amendment 2022.This was followed by a discussion of the fishermen’s views on the shark fishery and its resource status. The village head/co-operative society, association leader/representatives from the Tharuvaikulam, coastal fishing village also shared their opinions.Dr. R. Vinothkumar, Scientist summarized the points raised at the end of the panel discussion. The awareness workshop was co-ordinated by Dr. P.S. Asha, Principal Scientist.
Sea
ranching of the green tiger shrimp Penaeus
semisulcatus under the Central Sector Scheme component of
'Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana' (PMMSY)
A total of 6.8 million green tiger shrimp seeds (PL 35) were sea ranched at Mandapam, Koyilvadi (Palk Bay) on 7th September, 2023 under the Project entitled "Sea ranching of Green tiger shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus) Post Larvae (PL) in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu" funded by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India under the Central Sector Scheme component of the PMMSY. The shrimp seeds were released by Shri. M. Sivakumar, Assistant Director of Fisheries and Fisherman Welfare, Mandapam, Fishermen Association Leaders in the presence of Dr. K. Vinod, Head, Dr. G. Tamilmani, Principal Investigator of the project, Scientists and staff of Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI. The fishermen thanked the Government of India and ICAR-CMFRI for such an initiative and expressed that this activity will be helpful in replenishing and enhancing the green tiger shrimp stock in the wild. A total of 75.34 million green tiger shrimp seeds were sea ranched in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar since the inception of the Project (February, 2022). The sea ranching programme was coordinated by Dr. B. Johnson, Senior Scientist of the Centre.

A total of 1.6 million green tiger shrimp seeds (PL 20) were sea ranched at Maraikayarpattianam (Gulf of Mannar) on 23rd June, 2023 under the Project entitled "Sea ranching of Green tiger shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus) Post Larvae (PL) in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu" funded by Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India under the Central Sector Scheme component of the PMMSY. The shrimp seeds were released by the staff of Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI in the presence of Dr. G. Tamilmani, Head-in-Charge & Principal Investigator of the project. A total of 58.24 million green tiger shrimp seeds were sea ranched in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar since the initiation of the Project (February, 2022). The sea ranching programme was coordinated by Dr. B. Johnson, Senior Scientist of the Centre.
Hindi Workshop organised at Karwar Regional Station of ICAR-CMFRI
As a part of the Official Language Implementation, a workshop was organized by Karwar Regional Station of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) on 03.07.2023 on the topic "Common Hindi words used in office premises”. Shri Santhosh Seti, Hindi Teacher, Hindu School, Karwar delivered the lecture. Six Scientists and 14 employees of the station actively participated in the workshop. The programme was chaired by Dr. Prathibha Rohit, Head-in-Charge and Chairman, OLIC of Karwar Regional Station
