

WorldFish delegates visit ICAR-CMFRI to discuss joint research initiatives
A team from WorldFish, Malaysia, headed by Schmidt Jorn and Arun Padiyar, visited the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi to explore joint research initiatives in marine fisheries. Dr. Grinson George, Director of ICAR-CMFRI, welcomed the delegation and fostered a productive discussion.
The talks centered on promising collaborative avenues, including facilitating import of seed material of promising strains of seaweeds, research programmes on seaweed tissue culture and mass production of planting material, technical know-how on offshore seaweed farming, and development of linkages with international academia and industries for seaweed-based product development and trade.
Seaweed farming offers a bright prospect for economic growth, coastal livelihood and environmental conservation. The Mandapam Regional Centre of CMFRI in Mandapam, Tamil Nadu has been designated as the Centre of Excellence for seaweed cultivation in India by the Department of Fisheries under the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India. The Centre is committed to promote sustainable seaweed farming practices and address key challenges in the area with an aim to enhance India’s role in the global seaweed industry.
