CMFRI and Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the ISRO signed MoU

Research Updates

April 2019 - CMFRI and Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the ISRO signed MoU.

This MoU is to develop a centralized web portal and mobile application for national small wetland management. Real-time wetland advisories could enhance climatic resilience of small wetlands in the country. Space Application Centre (ISRO), Ahmedabad shall develop the Web portal and mobile application as per the requirement of ICAR-CMFRI, whereas the latter shall collaborate with interested stakeholder institutions to generate periodic field level wetland datasets. The data generated shall be stored in the SAC server with access to authorized scientific communities and ICAR – CMFRI shall be the nodal center for approving wetland data of partnering stakeholder institutions.

This is the first national instance that a fisheries institute is collaborating with ISRO to develop a comprehensive climate resilient framework for fisheries and wetlands.

December 2018 – Training to State of Himachal Pradesh for Implementation of E-Commerce in Fisheries Sector

As a first national instance by a Govt. institution in fisheries sector, ICAR-CMFRI developed multivendor e-commerce website and associated mobile app for enabling direct sales and marketing between fishers and customers. Govt. of Himachal Pradesh expressed interest to implement the similar system at their state and accordingly allocations were made in the state budget speech. Further Director cum Warden, Directorate of Fisheries, Himachal Pradesh sought the technical guidance from resource persons of ICAR - CMFRI.

Accordingly, Dr. P. U. Zacharia, Principal Investigator and Dr. Rojith. G, Research Associate, NICRA project were deputed as resource persons to provide necessary guidelines for implementation.

Success stories

  • Trained fishers undertake Ornamental fish culture: Through Marine ornamental fish culture a fisher family in Ramanathapuram district is earning an average monthly income of Rs.12,000/- to Rs.15,000/- (only grow-out of marine ornamental fishes; buying half-inch size clown fishes and grow them up to 1 ½ inch size, which is ready for marketing in 45 days).
