Rajarshi Tandon Rajbhasha Puraskar
ICAR- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi bagged Rajarshi Tandon Award (Ist Position) instituted by the ICAR, New Delhi for the excellent implementation of Official Language Policy among the Institutes situated in ‘C’ Region for the year 2017-2018. Institute is getting the Award for the 10th time. Dr.A.Gopalakrishnan, Director, CMFRI and Smt. E.K.Uma, Chief Technical Officer (Hindi) jointly received this prestigious Award from Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General of ICAR on the occasion of ICAR Foundation Day Celebration held on 16th July, 2019 at NASC Complex, New Delhi.
ICAR-CMFRI trains fisheries officials from
African Asian countries
ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi conducted a 15-day international training-cum-workshop in fisheries and aquaculture for the fisheries officials from 10 member countries of the African Asian Rural Development Organisation (AARDO) from 15th to 29th October 2019 at the ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi.
The workshop was aimed at imparting training on a range of topics such as marine fisheries assessment, fish stock estimation, marine fisheries environment, impact of climate change on fisheries, responsible fisheries and mariculture activities. Fisheries officials from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Oman, Morocco, Zambia, Malawi, Mauritius, Malaysia and Sri Lanka attended the training. The participants were given opportunity to familiarise themselves with the latest research and development activities being carried out by the ICAR-CMFRI. The programme included field visits and extensive travel through the coastal areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The programme was part of an international collaboration
between the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India and the AARDO,
which is
an inter-governmental organisation in the field of agricultural and rural
development with its headquarters in New Delhi.
During the valedictory of the training programme on 29th October 2019, Dr Manoj Nardeosingh, Secretary General of the AARDO was the guest of honour. He stressed the need for regional cooperation between the AARDO nations to improve the fisheries sector in respective countries. The Secretary General also said that experts and professionals in fisheries sector should focus on value addition and speedy transfer of technologies to transform the lives of the people in African Asian countries. Dr Manoj Nardeosingh appreciated ICAR-CMFRI for the smooth conduct of the AARDO training programme for the third consecutive years and he expressed his willingness to cooperate with the ICAR-CMFRI in coming years too.

hosts Buyer Seller Meet and Kisan Mela
ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi hosted a three-day Buyer Seller Meet and Kisan Mela from 14th to 16th November 2019 which was jointly organised by Swedeshi Science Movement, NABARD and Ernakulam Krishi Vigyan Kendra of ICAR-CMFRI. Inaugurated by Dr. A Gopalakrishnan, Director of ICAR-CMFRI, the event saw a huge footfall and thousands of visitors, including students and general public, were made aware of a range of produces from primary producers in agriculture and allied areas.
During the Buyer Seller Meet, more than 50 farmer producer
companies found potential buyers to sell their products, including rice, cereals,
pulses, vegetable oils, fish, dairy products and numerous value added products.
Farmers, farmer producer companies, self-help groups and agri start-ups from
Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka introduced their produces before a group of
buyers such as major organic shops, grocery stores, super markets, co-operative
stores, fertilizer dealers and wholesale dealers, at the meet. Coordinated by
the NABARD, the buyer seller meet was aimed at supporting organic farmers and
farmer producer groups to popularise their products in the market and to
promote safe food products. In addition, a large number of public also could
buy products directly from the producers during the meet. The meet helped farmer producers secure business deals for
marketing their products and, at the same time, wholesale dealers and major
organic purchasers connect directly to the primary producers helping them to
shorten the market chain.
The Kisan Mela turned into a big hit with a huge public rush was
being felt at every counter, especially at the counter for selling farmed live
fish. Around 2 tonnes of farmed seabass and tilapia were sold out during the
Mela. People waited patiently to get fresh fish in different sizes directly
from the fish farmers. A live kitchen that provided different tilapia dishes
was another attraction of the event. Farmed tilapia under the guidance of
Krishi Vigyan Kendra of ICAR-CMFRI was used for preparing dishes at the live
kitchen. The live kitchen was part of creating public awareness on quality and
nutritional value of tilapia fish because many people have misconception on
value of this fish. Tilapia culinary at the kitchen helped promote the value of
this fish variety among a large number of public and create an increased market
avenue for tilapia. The programme gave a boost to tilapia farmers in the
locality. A stall of farmed live edible oyster also drew the attention of
visitors.
An exhibition of farm machineries gave an insight into the
application of agro-drones, that are used in agriculture for pest and disease
management. This section also provided inputs as well as material for those
interested in taking up farming activities. Method of hydroponic farming
practices were also exhibited in the fest. A special pavilion was
designed for extending support to people to make easier bank loan formalities
with the support of Bank of India. Discussions on relevant topics were also
held as part of the programme.
Awareness programme on jellyfish by Mandapam Regional Centre
An awareness
programme on jellyfish was organized by the Mandapam Regional Centre of the
ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) at Kendriya Vidyalaya,
Mandapam on 6th November 2019. World jellyfish day is celebrated
every year on November 3rd to inculcate interest among the students,
researchers and general public to know more on these invertebrates. Secondary
students from 6th to 12th participated in the event. welcomed
the chief guests. Dr. A. K. Kumaraguru, Former Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam
Sundaranar University, Dr. G. Gopakumar, Former Principal Scientist and Head,
Mariculture Division and Ms. S. Sumathi, Principal of the school spoke on the
occasion. The programme was organized as
an outreach activity of MBD/JLY/32 by Dr. R.Saravanan.
Vigilance awareness week observed at Mandapam Regional Centre
Vigilance
awareness week was observed at Mandapam Regional Centre by taking the integrity
pledge 0n 28th October 2019. A palm seed planting activity was
carried out inside the CMFRI residential quarters on 29th October
2019. About 200 palm seeds were planted during this activity as a part of the vigilance
awareness activity. Shri. S. Unnikrishnan, Deputy Superintend of Police (Vigilance
and Anti-corruption wing) delivered a talk on vigilance activities on 30th
October 2019. He emphasized the importance of the observance of the week by
drawing various examples from his service and stressed the need to maintain
integrity in the duties of government services. During an interactive session, he
replied to the questions related to vigilance activities raised by the staff
members.
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi observed the Constitution Day on 26th November 2019 with much fervour and fanfare. The celebrations began by reading out the Preamble of the Constitution at 11 am by all the staff members and research scholars. The Preamble was displayed on standees, banners and posters at the office premises.
A talk on fundamental duties (FD) Article 51-A of the Indian Constitution with emphasis on 11th FD (provide opportunities for education to his child), was delivered by ICAR standing counsel, Adv. Santhosh Kumar. Dr A Gopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRI presided over the function. Later a special lecture on fundamental duties with emphasis of Article 51 of the Constitution briefing right to education was delivered by Adv. Sreeraj. It delineated how the rights of citizens become their privileges when they are adhering to their duties with examples under different articles and sections as elucidated in the constitution. Dr V Kripa and Dr P Shinoj also spoke on the occasion. Various programs were chartered out to be followed in the succeeding months.
Mandapam Regional Centre of CMFRI conducts
training on mariculture technologies
A training programme on “Mariculture Technologies for Diversified Livelihood” was organized at the Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) during 19-21 November, 2019. Held under the SCSP project, the training programme was inaugurated by Shri. K. Muraleedharan, Institute Management Member of ICAR-CMFRI. A total of 60 beneficiaries from Puthukudi, Thondi village participated the training. Hands on training on marine ornamental fish seed rearing, seaweed farming and sea cage farming were given to the fishers. Field visit to sea cage farms, seaweed farms and marine ornamental fish seed rearing units, Thangachimadam were arranged and the trainees interacted with the fish farmers and marketers. Dr. R. Jayakumar, Principal Scientist & Scientist-in-Charge delivered the presidential address. Smt. V.Prabavathy, Deputy Director of Fisheries Ramanathapuram and Shri. Abdul Kadher Jailani, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Ramanathapuram, Dr. G. Tamilmani and Dr. Johnson, B. Scientist spoke. The training programme was coordinated by Dr. Johnson, B., Scientist, Dr.Anikuttan, K.K., Scientist and Shri.M.Sankar, Scientist.
