Marine cage farming of orange spotted grouper at Karwar

As a part of the extension activities under the All India Network Project on Mariculture sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Karwar Research Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has successfully demonstrated the marine cage farming of orange spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) at  Baithkol, Karwar.

The farming was initiated during February 2019 by providing two marine cages to a fishermen Self Help Group (SHG) having 5 members from Baithkol led by Shri. Jaji Bhagath. Grouper fingerlings obtained from the Vishakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI were nursery reared and were stocked with a density of 20 fish / m3 in a 4 x 4 x 3 m square GI cage for the demonstration purpose. The fishes were fed with low value fishes collected from Karwar market by the SHG members at 5 % of the biomass daily. Routine monitoring of the cage was done by ICAR- CMFRI. Partial harvest of the fishes was initiated on 18.06.2019. After a farming period of 5 months the fishes have reached an average weight of 1.05 kg (range from 600 to 1.5 kg). So far, about 100 kg of fishes have been sold to local market at an average market price of Rs. 600/ kg fish.  It is expected a total production of 300 kg of grouper with an expected survival of above 75%.


Demonstration of orange spotted grouper by the SHG was highly appreciated by Dr. P. Pravin, ADG (Fisheries), ICAR, who visited the farm recently. A demonstration harvest was carried out during the national fish farmer’s day on 10th July 2019.

ICAR-CMFRI Observes International Yoga Day

Headquarters, Kochi

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) observed the International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2019 by organising an awareness workshop and demonstration of yoga asanas at its Headquarters in Kochi and various Regional Research Centres. Shri. Balakrishnan Menon, an eminent yoga trainer and advanced meditation course instructor of the Art of Living Foundation, Bangalore, was the chief guest of the workshop at the Headquarters of the Institute in Kochi.


He said that yoga is union of body, breath and mind which is highly helpful to improve physical and mental health. He also pointed out that the yoga practices have got a wide exposure and increased popularity with the Government of India and the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi actively supporting the initiatives ensuring a massive participation for the programme at the government institutes during special occasions like the International Yoga Day. The misunderstandings about the yoga existed in the past have been completely cleared with continuous awareness programmes. Apart from cleansing our body and health, regular practice of the yoga would help oneself to explore and know his/her inner mind, he said.


Inspired by the spirit of the awareness workshop, the Recreation Club of the ICAR-CMFRI which organised programme announced on the occasion the commencement of regular yoga training at the Institute twice in a week. The inauguration of the training was also held at the venue followed by the awareness workshop. Shri Balakrishnan Menon and Smt. Smitha K, Personal Assistant at ICAR-CMFRI led the yoga training session. Dr T V Sathianandan, Director-in-charge and Head of Fishery Resources Assessment Division of the Institute presided over the function. Dr V Kripa, Head of Fishery Environment and Management Division and the President of the Recreation Club coordinated the programme.


Mangalore Research Centre

International yoga day was celebrated at the centre on 21 June 2019. The programme started at 10.00 am. The message by Honourable Prime Minister on the importance of yoga in everyday life given in the booklet on common yoga protocols published by the Ministry of Ayush was read on the ocasion. This was followed by the practice session of all the yogasanas as per the protocol received from Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India. All the scientist, technical staff, research scholars and contractual staff actively participated in the yoga session.



Puri Field Centre 



Tuticorin Research Centre

In compliance with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address and the instruction received from ICAR the International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June, 2019 in Committee Hall, Tuticorin Research Centre of CMFRI at 10.30 AM.  The Yoga master Shri. Stalin Rathnasamy was invited for International Yoga day celebration. The programme was started with ICAR invocation song. Dr. P.P. Manojkumar, Scientist in-Charge and Principal Scientist of the Centre delivered the welcome address followed by Dr. P.S. Asha, Principal Scientist addressed the gathering about the needs of practicing Yoga. Stalin Rathnasamy delivered a special talk on the importance and benefits of Yoga in human life. He also added that yoga provides mental/physical strength to people and enhance well-being of human life through regular practice. Along with yoga healthy food habits improve the health and relief from bodily illness in human beings. After that he demonstrated different Asanas and Pranayama. All the staff members followed his instructions and did yoga exercise with complete involvement. The International Yoga Day celebration came to an end with a vote of thanks by Mr. Jerald Raja, Secretary, Recreation Club, TRC of CMFRI.



Mandapam Regional Centre

Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI celebrated the International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2019. A lecture followed by demonstration of yoga was conducted. Yoga expert Ms. Ms. Anitha, a yoga trainer at the Art of Living Foundation, and their volunteers demonstrated the yoga. She explained the importance of yoga in human life. Dr.G.Tamilmani, Senior Scientist briefed about the significance and relevance of the International Yoga Day. Nearly 100 staff of Mandapam Regional Centre attended the programme.



Madras Research Centre

The International Yoga Day was observed in Madras Research Centre of CMFRI, on 22nd June 2019. Dr. P. Laxmilatha, Principal Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge welcomed the chief guest and all the staff members. Three Karyakartas Shri. Karthikeyan Selvarajan, Dr. Smt. Indu Barkavi, MDS and Smt. G. Bhavani from Vivekananda Kendra, Chennai gave the presentation and demonstration of Yoga. The three Karyakartas gave a lecture on different aspect of practicing Yoga, life style disorders and the benefits of practicing Yoga daily and consistently. They interacted with the staff members of MRC and clarified their doubts. This was followed by demonstration of few asanas for the staff. After the demonstration they explained the need to continue Yoga consistently for achieving the benefits. Dr. P. Laxmilatha, Principal Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge honoured the Chief guest with mementos. The function concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. R.  Narayanakumar, Principal Scientist.



Calicut Research Centre

The International Day of Yoga is celebrated on the 21st of June, 2019 all over the world, to spread awareness about Yoga and adopting it in ones lifestyle by discussing its benefits.  On this occasion, demonstration of yoga was arranged at the Calicut Research Centre of ICAR-CMFRI for the benefit of all the staff members.  Prof (Dr) T.N.Vijayakumar, Former Principal and HOD, Dept of Zoology, NSS college, Manjeri, a well known Yoga expert, was the Chief Guest for the function.  Dr Vijayakumar expressed happiness in the enthusiasm shown by the staff members and spoke on the importance of yoga and meditation.  Prof Vijaykumar specialises in the Kayakalpa Yoga which helps in restructuring the body in a natural way, Kaya Kalpa helps cure and prevent diseases. It relieves the practitioner of many of the troubles of aging. 

He said practising yoga in our daily life is essential for physical and mental fitness and should be practiced in our day-to-day life. He said that practising yoga will not only help us drive away many diseases, but also help us remain active throughout the day and concentrate well in our daily activities.
