Our Host Institute - Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute(CMFRI)
Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, a subsidiary of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has a long history of 64 years in marine fishery research in the country.The institute is located in Kochi, Kerala, and has a wide network of 10 centres in the west and east coasts of India. There are 120 no of Scientists working in CMFRI who all are poineers in various aspects of marine fishery and alied fields.

About Us

History

Simultaneous with developing suitable packages of practices for the farming of marine organisms, CMFRI had also been giving priority for the speedy and continuous flow of economically viable technology from the laboratory to the end users. It was in this context that the Krishi Vigyan Kendra of CMFRI was established in December 1976 at Narakkal in Vypeen Island of Ernakulam District and started functioning in 1977 in a campus extending over 3.56 ha.The maiden attempt of Demonstration of the improved technology of selective farming of a penaeid shrimp (The Indian White Shrimp, Penaeus indicus) in a farmer’s field at Narakkal during December 1977– April ’78 marked the initiation of the KVK programmes.The Trainers’ Training Centre of CMFRI which started functioning in 1985 together with the KVK has played an important role in propagating the technology among the different maritime states.The Kendra has been receiving technical support from scientists of its parent organizations, CMFRI for all the training programmes. The KVK has extended its activities to other fields of agriculture also by starting training programmes on Animal husbandry during 1981-82. Presently it has expertise in all fields of agriculture and successfully conducted 1981 training programmes, 30 OFT’s and 24 FLD’s.

Salient Achivements of KVK

The KVK Ernakulam since its inception in 1976 has been concentrating much attention on identifying various rural resources and mobilizing them towards achieving employment genaration, agricultural area development ,technology upgradation and increased production.The KVK has played a vital role in the rapid ramification of the improved technology of shrimp farming all along the coastlines of our country.

Major achievements of the KVK Ernakulam is listed bellow .

  • Scientific Crab farming.

  • Recycling of organic waste using earth worms to produce vermi compost

  • Introduction of scientific cultivation of jasmine in Ernakulam district.

  • Introduction of Tissue culture banana

  • Scientific methods of shrimp farming.

  • Introduction of fresh water ornamental fish.

  • Introduction of green amaranthus variety CO-1.

  • Polyculture of different species of carps such as Catla, Rohu and Mrigal. 

  • Cage culture of Sea Bass in  polyculture System.

  • Introduction of new pokkali paddy varieties VTL- 6,7,8 and culture B9-D

  • High density planting of banana var- Nendran.

  • Introduction of euryhaline fishes in the unutilized fresh water pond systems.

  • Introduction of Sea bass culture (Diversification from the traditional crab farming).

  • Polyculture of fin fishes in backwater ponds.
